the trend of 88x31 pixel buttons was started by Netscape with their "Netscape Now!" buttons. It was then popularized by GeoCities, a free hosting platform in 1994, active up until 2009 (2019 in Japan), where people would link to each other's sites by using buttons of that same size. On Neocities, a revival of GeoCities on which this website is hosted, this tradition continues.
Another popular thing in the old web was to participate in web rings, a constellation of websites on a particular topic, and fanlistings, a way to find other websites that share the same interests.
Originally from DeviantArt, stamps are little artworks 99x51 pixels in size. They are used to showcase your interests or your opinions on things. They were popularized in the early 2010s and continue to be used on old web revivals like SpaceHey, Nekoweb and Neocities. Here's my personal collection:
